• Applied Engineer

  The Applied Engineer delivers technical support and consultancy to local support organizations and customers. Goal is to ensure an optimal application of high-tech solutions and devices in the client’s manufacturing process, the fastest possible ramp with the introduction of new technologies/ systems or solves problems in the clients fabric. The Applied Engineering is the key in ‘making it work’ at the customers site in ICT and semicon related businesses. He/she organizes the necessary feedback loops with his/her own organization to further optimize the (integration of this) new technology/ system/ devices or solve problems in a later phase of the implementation. The innovative and top tech character of this line of work requires specific engineering and/or software skills (product knowledge) combined with a customer focus (tailor made consultancy and support).

• Automotive engineers

• Chemical engineers

  As a chemical engineer you apply the principles of chemistry to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals and bio chemicals. • Clinical laboratory scientists

  As a clinical laboratory scientist you'll perform behind-the-scenes laboratory tests that physicians rely on to diagnose and treat patients. Your daily activities may range from confirming a case of diabetes or strep throat to detecting an early case of leukemia.

• Embedded software engineers

  As an embedded software engineer your specific responsibilities will include:

• Materials scientists

  As a materials scientist you apply physics as well as chemistry to study all aspects of materials. You study the structures and chemical properties of various materials to develop new products or enhance existing ones. • Mechanical engineers

  As a mechanical engineer you research, design, develop, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. • New Energy specialists

  Future mobility is faced by two great challenges. The first challenge is to secure our energy supply. Fossil fuel reserves are depleting and oil prices will increase in the next decades. The age of cheap oil is drawing to a close. The second challenge is the reduction of CO2 emissions and other harmful emissions.

  There is thus an increasing need for fuels from renewable sources, such as hydro, wind, solar and biomaterial. Additional R&D is needed to find new energy solutions and integration of these in to (new) products.

  We must also use less fuel by investing in the development of highly efficient products and processes. This can in the automotive industry for example be achieved by advances in engine or transmission technology or by improving the efficiency of the drivetrain as a whole by the development of an integrated powertrain.

• PhD
  What is doing a PhD in the Southeast Netherlands like?

  The aim of doing a PhD is to complete a dissertation based on original research. In the Southeast Netherlands this requires a minimum of four years of doing research and writing. PhD research projects and dissertations must of course always be original work, as candidates are required to make an original contribution to the body of knowledge in their field.

  The dissertation is made public and parts of it are often used as articles in international journals. In general Dutch dissertations are held in high esteem since they live up to the highest academic standards.

  Once the research is complete the supervisor judges whether the dissertation is ready for publication and oral defence. Then a committee of professors is appointed to read and approve the dissertation and to question the candidate at the traditional, centuries old oral defence ceremony.

  Finding a PhD position

  In the Southeast Netherlands, research is carried out by research universities, research institutes and companies. Only the research universities can award PhD degrees. However, since other research institutes generally work in close collaboration with these universities, they can also provide positions to PhD candidates.
  In addition to the standard PhD degree, the university of technology also offer design and technological design programmes in a number of engineering fields. These consist of advanced study and a personal design assignment. Technological design programmes require two years of study to complete and graduates obtain the degree of ‘Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng)’.

  In the Southeast Netherlands there are three types of PhD positions. The PhD candidate is employed by the institution, brings funding with him/her, such as a fellowship or grant, or is funded by his/her external employer.
  PhD candidates in the Southeast Netherlands are regarded as professional researchers rather than as students. The fact that the majority of the PhD candidates is employed, strengthens their status as professional researcher. PhD researchers are often paid employees. Of the total number of PhD candidates in the Southeast Netherlands, the majority sign an employment contract with the research institute at which they do their PhD-research. There are two ways to find a PhD position: through vacancies or networks.

• Physical chemists

  As a physical chemist you study the physical characteristics of atoms and molecules and the theoretical properties of matter; and they investigate how chemical reactions work. Your research may result in new and better energy sources.

• Physicists

  As a process engineer you develop economical industrial processes. Your work is concerned with physical, chemical or biochemical processes, and involves scaling up processes from the laboratory into the processing plant.
